Platelet-Rich Plasma

Platelet-Rich Plasma

What is PrP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy? Let’s first discuss where the plasma comes from, your blood. Your blood contains red and white cells, platelets & plasma. The platelets contain something called growth factors, which are proteins that regulate cell growth and division. Doctors discovered that separating out and concentrating platelets from your body’s own blood plasma and inserting them at injury sites such as muscle tears, tendon and ligament tears, or joint issues, dramatically accelerated the healing process for the injuries.

PrP as a Hair Loss Treatment:

Additionally, PrP is very effective in reversing hair loss. The most common cause of hair loss is linked to genetics. Influencing factors include nutrition status, medications, age, illness & chemical exposure.

Hair Loss in Women:

The majority of women notice hair loss beginning in their fifties or sixties, however hair loss can occur at any time after puberty.

Hair Loss in Men:

Male-pattern baldness (“androgenic alopecia”) is the term most associated with hereditary hair loss. With age, there is a gradual reduction in the size of the hair follicles, which in turn causes each subsequent hair to be thinner than the last. Additionally, each new hair grows for a shorter period of time than the normal three years. Eventually, the hair does not grow far enough to reach the surface of the skin.

How PrP works in hair restoration:

When growth factors are injected into the scalp, stem cells are stimulated to produce new tissue, including hair. Hair follicles are signaled to re-enter the growth phase to re-grow hair which has been thinning.

What does a PrP hair growth session involve?

PrP Therapy for hair loss is an in-office procedure that typically takes 60-90 minutes. First, we’ll examine the affected area to determine if the cause of your hair loss is one that can be treated with PrP. We’ll take a small sample of your blood and process it to make PrP. The scalp is then cleaned with an antiseptic solution. Lastly, small injections of the PrP are injected into your scalp.

Are PrP injections painful?

Patients can expect mild to moderate discomfort during this injections; therapy also involves a blood draw.

How long does it take for results to appear? How long does it last?

As short as 1 month or as long as 6 months; new hair growth is typically evident at 4 months post-treatment. After the first 3-4 treatments spaced at one-month intervals, we recommend a treatment at least every 6-12 months to prevent further thinning.

What is the cost of PrP therapy for hair loss?

The cost per treatment is $800 session or package of 3 for $1920 (20% discount). This includes drawing your blood, processing it into platelet-rich plasma & the injections.

When can I expect to see results from PrP injections?

Generally results are seen within 6 months, however, this timeline will depend on your age & how long your hair has been thinning.

Are there some patients with genetic hair loss that don’t respond to PrP injections?

Yes, there are some patients who will not respond to PrP therapy for hair regrowth.

What are the side effects from the treatment?

Mild redness and swelling at the injection sites can be expected, which resolves within a few days. As with any injections, there is a very small risk of infection, but treatment with antibiotics would be promptly utilized if this unexpected side effect occurs. We use sterile technique and skin preparation to prevent infection and we’ve never had a patient have an infection from PrP.

Will I need to use hair loss medications while being treated with PrP?

No, however, supplements will be recommended on an individualized basis to enhance & sustain hair regrowth.

Do I need a medical consultation prior to PrP injections?
